Thanks for visiting the site. I’m a User Experience Researcher working and living in Seattle, Washington. You can find out more about me and what I’ve worked on by clicking around this site.

Besides shipping products, here are a few of the things I do in my spare time: play and watch soccer, run around with my dog, have fun with my son, manage a few websites, Xbox live gaming and other fun geeky stuff. Plus I’m always looking for the next good book. And I do my best to keep up with the latest trends in technology. Everybody has their “thing”. They’ve got work, family and their thing. My thing is soccer. I’ve been playing since I was 8 and I still get out there as much as I can. I’ve been lucky to play on teams with great guys and gals, some of them for the last 10 years. Besides helping me stay in shape and out of the house, I met my lovely wife playing soccer.

As my friends like to say, I landed a “dream job” right out of grad school. After a 3 month internship, I joined the Microsoft Games Studio full time. I worked across several projects at a time, focusing on both usability and the “fun” of each game. On a given week I would go between [...]]]>

As my friends like to say, I landed a “dream job” right out of grad school. After a 3 month internship, I joined the Microsoft Games Studio full time. I worked across several projects at a time, focusing on both usability and the “fun” of each game. On a given week I would go between standard lab studies, surveys and focus groups, and between planning sessions for one project and last minute ship meetings for another. Plus I worked on several of the original sports titles and early iterations of Xbox Live.

I also had the opportunity to manage several contingent workers, create new processes for running large number of participants, and co-ran a “Do it yourself usability” tutorial at GDC.

So my friends were right, it was a dream job. Getting paid to sit around watching real users play video games was a great way to start my career at Microsoft.

For 2 years, I was a Human Factors Engineer at SonoSite Inc. working on portable ultrasound systems. As part of the team, I helped create a product targeted at Regional Anesthesiologists focused on simplicity and efficiency. For 2 years, I was a Human Factors Engineer at SonoSite Inc. working on portable ultrasound systems. As part of the team, I helped create a product targeted at Regional Anesthesiologists focused on simplicity and efficiency. We owned the UI design and worked closely with the industrial design team on everything from button size to colors and materials.

Along with several other projects, I also worked on the NanoMaxx series which was specifically designed for Military use, and other emergency situations that require durability and ease of use.

Plus it was an opportunity to do extensive field work in hospitals, physician offices and emergency rooms.
